Autonomous shuttle experiment at the Carros industrial estate
L&IMREDD has launched a trial of an autonomous shuttle. For four weeks, employees of participating companies can test this new technology and take part in surveys related to the trial.
As the largest industrial zone in the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolitan area, Carros has been selected as one of the pilot areas for the «Territoires d'Industrie» national programme for industrial regeneration. At the heart of its development plan is a specific «Mobility - autonomous shuttle» initiative, bringing together partners to carry out a pre-feasibility study and experiment with autonomous vehicles and services tailored to the needs of the area's employees. Combined with new forms of car-sharing or transport on demand, these services can change the boundaries between individual and collective transport, and thus encourage the introduction of new economic models in terms of local mobility policies and the ability to deploy suitable infrastructure. The aim of this trial is to demonstrate that it is possible to operate autonomous vehicles without an operator on board, in an environment similar to that of a built-up area. It will also help to validate the technology and the business model, which is a prerequisite for the deployment of a large-scale service. Given its size (550 companies spread over 188 hectares) and the number of people it attracts (10,000 employees), the Carros industrial estate is an ideal demonstration site.
