Towards sustainable urban energy: new wind turbine at IMREDD
L’IMREDD – Université Côte d’Azur is welcoming a second wind turbine onto its roof today, thereby consolidating its role as a technological incubator serving the region. Since September 2020, the IMREDD building, located in the Var plain, has been a site for experimenting with different renewable technologies, aiming to assess and optimise their contribution to the local energy transition.
This new phase includes the integration of a horizontal-axis wind turbine specifically designed to harness urban winds, combined with solar panels to maximise energy production. With a capacity of 2.1 kWp, this WindBox wind turbine is part of IMREDD's pragmatic approach, focused on experimentation and the harmonious integration of emerging technologies into evolving urban environments.
Its performance will be assessed in comparison with the previously installed vertical-axis wind turbine, and it will contribute to the energy strategy of IMREDD and the Nice Méridia district. Controlled by an intelligent energy management system developed by IMREDD, its production can be stored and redistributed according to local needs, thereby supporting the resilience of the electrical grid and promoting the development of the Nice Méridia energy community.
