Alpimed CLIMA
Goals
The CLIMA project aims to understand and act on the effects of climate change within the cross-border area. The ALPIMED region comprises two Italian provinces (Cuneo and Imperia) and one French department (Alpes-Maritimes), comprising a total of 89 municipalities with a population of 89,143 inhabitants in the mountain area, covering an area of 3,642 km², and 131,020 inhabitants in the urban area of 512 km². It comprises remarkable landscapes and boasts some of the richest biodiversity in Europe; 60% of its area is protected. Its climatic position in southern Europe makes the territory particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Although there is genuine awareness among institutions, stakeholders and residents of climate change and its consequences for the environment and the local economy, action is needed to support the region’s resilience.
The CLIMA project aims to improve territorial planning by public institutions for adaptation to climate change. climatic through improved knowledge of both resources and the impacts they suffer, the identification of efficient and sustainable solutions that will offer concrete tools to stakeholders, and the awareness and mobilisation of everyone, which will support the necessary change in practices.
As part of this project, IMREDD is involved in WP3, which focuses on developing a joint cross-border strategy to tackle climate change, and in WP4, which focuses on climate change mitigation.
More specifically, under WP3, the aim is to engage local elected representatives and stakeholders in the fight against climate change through a participatory approach and shared content within a cross-border strategy. This strategy will ensure the long-term sustainability of the partnership’s initiatives and commit stakeholders to a joint approach to action beyond the Territorial Climate Plan. Thus, IMREDD is helping to take stock of the legal and technical tools that will enable the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis to support stakeholders in the cross-border area in a sustainable strategy promoting climate action and the region’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.
The IMREDD is also working in partnership with the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan Area and the Mercantour Ski Resorts Joint Association to conduct trials at ski resorts aimed at optimising their energy consumption and exploring innovative, more environmentally friendly alternatives. The aim is to develop smart, exemplary resorts by reducing their carbon footprint and promoting local renewable energy sources.
