Nice Méridia Energy Community
Goals
Contributing to the energy resilience of the territory through a project of alliance between a neighbourhood community and institutions
Faced with climate change and the growing electrification of uses, territories must strengthen their energy autonomy, reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and better synchronise production and consumption. From this perspective, the creation of an Energy Community constitutes a major lever for developing local renewable energy production models, optimising energy flows, and fostering active citizen participation.
Located in the heart of the Eco-Valley, the Nice Méridia eco-district offers fertile ground for this transition. Its mixed urban organisation – housing, businesses, services, shops – and its configuration favouring active (walking, cycling) or shared mobility naturally limit energy needs. The district already relies on a mix of local renewable energies, including solar energy, geothermal energy, and efficient heating networks, thus forming a solid base for decentralised energy management.
In this context, several local stakeholders are joining forces to create an energy community capable of optimally producing, pooling, and consuming local renewable energy. The challenge is to improve the balance between supply and demand, reduce losses due to production surpluses, and limit the reliance on storage, which is still costly and complex. This approach requires intelligently coupling local networks with global infrastructure and strengthening social acceptance of flexible usage patterns.
The ultimate objective is to structure an operational and reproducible model for a Citizen Energy Community, bringing together the key buildings in the district: the Habitat 06 residences, the Palazzo Méridia office building, the IMREDD building, the Campus Sud des Métiers, and the Méridia Smart Energie premises. Together, these stakeholders will form the core of the future energy community and will actively contribute to strengthening the energy resilience of the district and, more broadly, our territory.
